Harbor Technologies has manufactured a vehicular composite bridge beam at 105’ 7” long, 6’ wide, and 5’ deep for the Missouri DOT which they say is the world’s longest vehicular composite bridge beam manufactured to date. Harbor Technologies in Brunswick, Maine has constructed the HCB (Hybrid Composite Beam) for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Saf and Sound bridge replacement project.
The Safe and Sound program, which started in 2009, is underway repairing and replacing 802 bridges in a timeframe of 5 years. According to Harbor, 672 bridges have already been completed to date. This particular beam is for one of three bridge jobs which Harbor Technologies is supplying HCB’s to the Safe and Sound project. Harbor explains that a total of 3 HCBs are being supplied for the single span bridge replacement over Sons Creek on highway 97 in Dade County, Missouri, US.
They say the contractor for the job is KTU Constructors, which is a joint venture between Kiewit Western, Taylor Brothers, and United Contractors. 15 beams at 60’ long were supplied to a Safe and Sound Bridge in Mountain Grove, Missouri in July 2011.
The reinforcement system based on a carbon cloth can restore and increase the carrying capacity of structures in a short time and less effort than traditional methods, as well as significantly increase the life of the structure.
